Levi being interviewed by Bob Roll.

Santa Rosa’s Levi Leipheimer took the yellow jersey on Stage 6, Golden to Boulder, 103 miles culminating in a 5-mile climb up Flagstaff Mountain.  Levi came in 4th on the day, and moved 9 seconds ahead of Christian Vande Velde and 21 ahead of Tejay van Garderen, who started the day in the yellow.

Before today’s stage Levi was just 8 seconds off the lead, and he  told a reporter that he “felt good and liked his chances” of winning the race in spite of the fact that Sunday’s time trial finish is only a 9.5 mile course.  Perhaps that reporter forgot what Levi had done last year in a climbing finish to take the race lead.

Levi’s successful attacks ascending Flagstaff got him the yellow.  He told reporters that “It was one of the most beautiful days of cycling I’ve ever seen.”
